A pilot program is under way to put a new "spark" into downtown Toledo.
Mayor Mike Bell unveiled three electric vehicle chargers Thursday morning near the corner of Superior and Adams streets. The location was chosen because it's a busy portion of the downtown area. The city will monitor the usage to determine the need to expand the program in other locations.
The units cost $7,200 and installation assistance was provided through a contract with local TAS Electric. Bell says it is money well spent to help the city "keep up with the times" and become business-friendly.
"The concern was we don't have charging stations in our downtown area, seeing we have a lot of business people coming back and forth, we wanted to be user-friendly to the business community in the downtown area, and anybody else that's coming down here," said Bell.
Motorists will have to pay for metered parking during the enforce time periods, but can plug into the charger for free.
