YMCA daycare labeled risk after child wanders away

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The state has labeled the YMCA daycare in Perrysburg a serious risk, and ordered them to take additional training.

An investigation into the daycare has found that children there were not being supervised, which is why they say a child with autism was able to just walk out of the building last month.

"It's very scary," said Kristie Hughes, a concerned parent. "I can't even imagine."

The boy was found wandering barefoot at the corner of Cedar Court and Southwood Drive. Police say he was missing from the daycare for nearly 23 minutes. During that time, no caretakers from the daycare contacted police. He was seen by a man driving in the area, who stopped and contacted police.

"How did this child get out?" Hughes asked. "I was formerly a teacher, so throughout the day we did head counts. So how did this get missed?"

A report released by the Department of Jobs and Family Services says the daycare has been labeled a serious risk because children were not being supervised. Parents say they don't understand how the boy managed to walk away.

"That seems very concerning, that they're not in a safe building, either," said Stephanie Clements, another concerned mother.

Officials at the YMCA say the safety and supervision of children is a top priority and that they will comply with the recommendations in the report.
