TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A plan to put a gas station at a busy west Toledo intersection
is fueling some controversy.
A request for a Special Use Permit is before
Toledo City Council, to add fuel sales to the Stop and Go carry-out operation
at the corner of Byrne Road and Dorr Street. The Plan Commission is recommending approval
based on more than two dozen conditions being met. The proposal would result in
a $1 million improvement to the property to add three fuel pumps at that
District 1 Councilman Tyrone Riley is opposing the SUP request. He
says neighbors in the area are worried it will attract more traffic and put safety at risk.
"Residents are concerned this will increase traffic. It's one of the
most dangerous in the state of Ohio. The second concern they have is crime," said Riley.
Riley will need eight others on City Council to join in his opposition. Nine votes are
needed to overturn a recommendation by the Plan Commission. The earliest a
Council vote could happen is Oct. 29.
