TPS parents learn about new academic standards

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Academic requirements have changed at Toledo Public Schools.

Common Core standards are a much more rigorous set of standards that TPS students are dealing with. A presentation for parents was held at the Toledo Zoo Wednesday night to go over the standards.

Common core sets similar standards across the whole country. The TPS curriculum has changed in the subjects of math and English language arts. For example, students are being required to read more informational text and learning how to better understand information they read.

The district has been preparing students for four years. They will be assessed on the new standards in the spring of 2015.

"To increase the rigor, to ensure that all students are college and career-ready, and what that really means is that students leave twelfth grade ready to enter a two or four-year program without the need of remedial classes, or to enter the workforce without the need of remediation before they can go through a training program," explained Kay Wait, a Common Core expert for TPS.

Common Core is very controversial, since it's so demanding and many districts are rejecting it, but TPS must follow through so they can keep their ‘Race to the Top' federal funds.
