Findlay schools reach out to mental health professionals

Posted: Updated:
FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

After noticing a problem with suicidal threats and fighting among their students, Findlay school teachers and principals have reached out to local mental health professionals.

Now, with the help of organizations like the Family Resource Center of Findlay, they're setting up a system where both students and parents can address issues in a safe environment, before problems escalate to a dangerous level.

The schools also want to set up a protocol for teachers who notice strange behavior, allowing them to know immediately who to contact and how to get the child help.

"We're finding some students have some real deep-seated challenges in their lives that mental health experts can help us with," said Findlay City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dean Wittwer. "Most of our counselors have the skills to do most of those things, but sometimes the families need more than we can offer."
