ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A donation is allowing one Adrian school to take learning outside the traditional classroom.

Lincoln Elementary School will soon have a special classroom behind the school. The outdoor space will be an area teachers can use for certain lessons.

"We will have an actual learning space," explained Principal Sam Skeels. "We will have benches and a teaching podium…We will have a greenhouse, a pond for different habitats."

The outdoor classroom is something the school has been wanting for years, but they've been able to speed the process along thanks to a $30,000 donation from the man whose family used to own the land where the school is located.

"A man who, at 95, has been nice enough and really committed enough to build a relationship with us that will last far beyond his lifetime and impact teachers and students for years to come," Skeels said.

Teachers at Lincoln say they're excited about how the space will allow students to take their learning to the next level.

"The outdoor classroom will provide an alternative learning location for the students to present that knowledge, or act on that knowledge, or perform that knowledge, or reflect on that new knowledge," said Jill Roberts, a teacher.

Skeels says the area should be ready to use by spring.
