Sylvania Township Police officers now have a new tool in high speed pursuits. Officers were trained to use the "PIT maneuver" on Friday.
PIT stands for Pursuit Immobilization Technique. To execute the maneuver, an officer pulls the front end of his or her vehicle near the rear tire of one side of the suspect's car and slams the police car against the suspect's vehicle, causing it to spin out.
Intentionally initiating a collision may sound dangerous, but officers say it's the safest way to stop a suspect fleeing arrest in a car.
"If we can stop a pursuit shortly after it begins, there's less likelihood of any civilians or any of the officers, even a bad guy from being injured or killed," said Sylvania Township Officer John Tanner.
