The Lucas County Health Department held a special press conference Friday following the death of a 57-year-old Lucas County woman, Diane Wlodarski. Wlodarski's death was attributed to West Nile virus.
During the press conference, health officials urged residents not to worry, saying that getting sick from the disease is rare.
They also said the disease is most dangerous to the young, elderly, and those with immune deficiencies.
Wlodarski went to the emergency room with flu-like symptoms three weeks ago. She was later hospitalized after it was discovered she had contracted West Nile virus.
Wlodarski had a pre-existing condition which compromised her immune system, which health officials believe may have compounded the effects of the virus. She died Saturday, Oct. 12, marking the third West Nile virus-related death in Lucas County in the last five years.
