RUTHERFORD, NJ (RNN) - A New York Jets fan was caught on video punching a woman in the face after his team defeated the New England Patriots in overtime on Sunday. The New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident that took place near one of the exits at MetLife Stadium.
The woman in the video was wearing a New England Patriots T-shirt, though the video does not show how the brawl began.
"We are aware of the situation and do not tolerate that behavior," a Jets spokesman told the New York Daily news. "Parties involved were detained and this matter is now in the hands of the New Jersey State Police."
The alleged attacker, who is dressed in a No. 80 Wayne Chrebet jersey and green camouflage pants, was tussling with some fans and apparently struck the woman after she moved toward him. A second man, dressed in New England took a few swings at the Jets fan before the crowd pulled them apart.
Multiple media outlets have identified the man as Kurt Paschke and say he served three years in jail in the '90s for criminally negligent homicide.
His mother told the New York Daily News that her son was protecting her and that the Patriots fans struck first.
"He was just hitting back to defend himself," she said.
