The conjoined twins were separated at LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – Two years ago, conjoined twins separated at LeBonheur Children's Hospital made international headlines. We're sad to report one of them has passed away.
It took dozens of doctors and support personnel to successfully separate these twins. Many of whom are no doubt among those mourning tonight.
Adrienne Spates cried the first time her sons actually saw each other.
It was two years ago last month when LeBonheur Children's Hospital announced the surgery that successfully separated conjoined twins Jacob and Joshua.
"I'm glad that everyone gets to see my baby and view them as separate people because they are and they have their own personalities," Spates said in 2011
Members of the Spates family now confirm that 2 year-old Jacob passed away last week.
At the time he and his brother were freed from their fused spine, doctors described it as the hospital's most complex case ever and they talked about Jacob's health challenges.
"Jacob has got a hill to climb yet with his heart operation and other problems. Joshua seems like a normal baby. He's ready to go off to the races," Dr. Max Langham from LeBonheur's Children Hospital said in 2011.
No one from LeBonheur was available to discuss what exactly may have led to Jacob's death some two years after making history.
NJ Ford & Sons Funeral Home is handling arrangements for Jacob Spates.
The funeral is set for this Saturday at 2 o'clock.
