In two weeks, Toledo voters will decide if Mayor Mike
Bell will get to serve four more years in office, or if Mike Collins becomes
the next mayor.
A new ad by the Bell campaign highlights some ‘no votes'
by Councilman Collins to oppose measures the mayor says helped move the city
"We didn't do a lot of things we were doing without
trying to think outside the box," Bell said. "Many times [Collins] was the
advocate of putting the stick in the wheel or saying no."
One of those ‘no votes' by Collins was on the issue to
have a private contractor take over trash and recycling services, and while the
mayor says it was a fix, Collins says it was a bad move for the city.
"It isn't private whatsoever," Collins said. "We paid $12
million for the trucks, sold them for $8 million, paid $9.3 million for the
containers, gave them away, and now we're completely responsible for accounts
payable to the contractor with the county and we're giving them free tipping
Collins says he's running on a platform to make city
government more transparent and responsive, which includes a plan to make the
entire city income tax permanent, and reduce that rate from 2.25 percent to 2.20
percent, a plan which would have to be approved by voters.
"This will give us an edge on job retention in the City
of Toledo," he said.
With two weeks to go before the election, Mayor Bell is
asking voters to take a close look at his record in office.
"We're fixing roads, we're adding police officers," he
