Construction begins in Genoa for drainage project

GENOA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One part of a construction project in Genoa is being delayed as another gets the green light.

Construction will start next week on Washington Street from 6th to 8th Street as part of a storm water drainage project.

Three years ago, the Village of Genoa started phase one of the renovations project. Village Administrator Kevin Gladden says that included curb and gutter repairs.

"Washington Street, from conception, was an unimproved street, so the pavement was pretty rough and the drainage was poor," Gladden said.

For the upcoming phase two, the village plans to install storm sewers, gutters, curbs and new pavement. Due to weather, however, the laying of the new pavement has been delayed until the spring.

"Just because of the weather and the amount of work that needs to be done, we've decided to do the under drainage work this year," Gladden said.

He says the under drainage work will be done now so when the asphalt is poured next year, it will have a longer life span.

"The overall benefit is just the drainage," he said. "Getting rid of the storm water and making it nice to drive on."

The project will cost a total of $220,000 and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2014.
