A Toledo councilman seeking re-election finds himself in hot water with the Ohio Democratic Party.
Since the state party approved a resolution of support for Toledo mayoral candidate Mike Collins, ODP Chairman Chris Redfern says he had no choice but to sanction Adam Martinez for his endorsement of Mayor Mike Bell.
"I never would have agreed to that endorsement had I known Adam would endorse someone with Mike Bell's record on labor, and the fact Mike Bell stood shoulder to shoulder with John Kasich for the repeal of collective bargaining," said Redfern.
Redfern has ordered Martinez to be removed from the state party's online voter file and says his name will not appear on future party sample ballots.
Martinez argues he hasn't turned his back on his party, because there is no official endorsement in the mayor's race.
"I'm a little surprised, but the problem is he doesn't have the power to un-endorse me. I'm endorsed by the local party," explained Martinez.
Martinez wants to stress to Toledo voters heading to the polls Nov. 5 that he's pro-labor.
"I am against right-to-work. I will help support any initiative that defeats that if it gets to the ballot," said Martinez.
Finishing seventh in the at-large council primary, Martinez needs to be in the top six in the general election to serve four more years.
