Seventh prescription drug take back held across Western MA

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

For the seventh time in the last three years, Western Massachusetts communities got together to take unused prescription drugs off the streets.

The boxes were piling up on Saturday afternoon at Central High School, as a steady flow of residents came through with their unwanted prescriptions.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) works with local police to make this event happen twice a year.

The DEA said the take back events are vital to public safety and public health.

All of the pills collected in the region on Saturday were also destroyed.

Officials told CBS 3 that they collected nearly 2,500 pounds of drugs in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties on Saturday.

Since the take backs began, they have brought in over 25,000 pounds of drugs from the area.
