Driver dies in Multi-vehicle accident on I-64 at Laburnum Ave

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A multi-vehicle accident that closed several lanes of Interstate 64, near Laburnum Ave has turned deadly. All lanes are now open.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday, state police responded to the scene after the driver of a 2000 Pontiac Montana struck a 2000 GMC Safari.  The impact caused the driver of the GMC to overturn. 

The driver of the GMC, who was not wearing his safety belt, was ejected from the vehicle.  He suffered serious life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital where he later died. 

 The driver and a passenger in the Pontiac were also not wearing their safety belts and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.  They were both transported to VCU Medical Center. 

Virginia State Police is consulting with the Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney's Office as charges are pending against the driver of the Pontiac. 

 Identity of the deceased is pending next of kin notification

Identity of the deceased is pending next of kin notification, but investigators say the victim is 42 years old from Richmond.
