Humane Ohio needs donations to feed animals

(Toledo News Now) -

Humane Ohio is expecting to provide a total of 80,000 pounds of pet food to families in need by the end of the year, but they're worried they won't be able to provide the service next year.

The organization provides food to strays and families who need a little extra help, but officials say their food bank is running low.

"One of the suppliers of our pet food has had a change in corporate policy, so our donations are unexpectedly down," said Jill Borkowski from Humane Ohio.

Unfortunately, the demand for pet food has increased, as well. Last year, Humane Ohio served about 230 households per month. This year that number is more than 280.

"There are people out there that rely on this every month," said Loretta Deal at the food bank. "This is my first time here and it's kind of scary because I know there's a lot of people that need it."

The high demand and a love of animals is what motivated Kymberly Smith to make a donation.

"There are many people in the community that do not have the ability to pay, and I've been blessed," Smith said. "I've had to use the food bank from time to time, and what you want to do is remember these moments and just pay it forward."

The food bank gave away 70,000 pounds of food last year. So far this year, they've given away 64,000 pounds. Officials are hoping their plea will help them stock the shelves and feed more animals in need.

"We rely on donations to keep our shelves stocked," Borkowski said. "We have little-to-no budget to go out and buy food, so when people in the community donate a bag or a can, it's one more person and pet we can help every week."

The pet food bank is available for residents in Lucas, Wood and Monroe counties. Visit their website for information on how to donate.
