More living options coming to downtown Adrian

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A big push is underway to provide more housing opportunities in downtown Adrian.

Several buildings could see some new life as downtown development leaders work to turn empty space into new apartments.

Downtown Development Authority Director Chris Miller says living space and new businesses go hand in hand.

"As we can add people to downtown who live here, who then will patronize the businesses…it then builds a stronger case when we're looking at bringing new businesses in," Miller said.

That's why he's working with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and local building owners to get federal dollars that can help them turn vacant upper floors into homes.

"There's a lot of good things happening," said Joni Warner, who works in Adrian. "There's been lots of businesses moving downtown."

Those who live and work in the area say they think lots of people would want to take advantage of the new apartments.

"There's definitely a need, and I think a variety, too," Warner said. "I think college students, but I think also people that are downsizing and looking to come back downtown."

Miller says the goal is to have apartments available in 6-9 months.
