(WMC-TV) - An investigation continues into the murder of 19-year-old Montez Jackson, who was a father about to join the military or fire department to support his newborn.
The shooting happened near the Camden Grove Apartments in Cordova.
"We've been here two months, no problems," said neighbor Kathy Bryant recalling the incident. "A lady came running and [said] someone had been shot."
Friends say the shooting victim went by the name Tez. He was popular throughout the apartment complex for his happy-go-lucky attitude and willingness to help neighbors.
"Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it, find out what this was all about and why this young man lost his life," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.
Authorities found Jackson dead on a walkway between buildings. He was shot once in the chest.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office arrested a suspect in connection to the murder Thursday.
Michael Baker is charged with criminal attempted aggravated robbery.
According to a news release, he will not be charged in Jackson's death after investigators ruled it a justifiable homicide.
Baker and Jackson were allegedly meeting a third person in a deal made on social media to sell an iPhone.
The buyer arrived at the complex to buy the phone, and Jackson pulled out a gun and demanded money. Then the buyer grabbed the gun and it went off killing Jackson.
