TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Changes could be on the way for the University of Toledo's smoking policy. Student leaders say they plan to meet with university officials to propose a complete ban.

Currently, UT has designated smoking areas designed to keep the smoke contained. According to the UT student government, more than half of the students want to see the areas gone, and smoking banned completely.

"Not a lot of people like it," said Maddisen Rodriguez, a student. "I hear a lot of students complain about it."

About 60 percent of students are in favor of the ban, according to a recent survey. But while some students are in favor, others say a ban could do more harm than good.

"I think they shouldn't, because people are going to do it anyway's and the designated smoking areas keep it contained and clean," said Ashlee Beeching. "If we don't have it, people are still going to do it anyway's and just throw cigarette butts everywhere."

"I understand people don't like it and they don't like the smell and stuff like that, and I respect it, but people are going to smoke," added Shardy Smith.

Others say they think the ban would help.

"I don't know if it would completely stop it, but I know it would cut it down," said Rodriguez.

The student government president says they're taking the survey results and legislation for a smoking ban to UT trustees next Tuesday.
