TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The televised debate Wednesday night on Fox Toledo,
branded as "The Final Showdown," was in sharp contrast to the soporific, somnambulant
debate which took place on Tuesday.
Jerry Anderson is without peer when it comes to
generating energy and demanding focus from candidates. Mayor Bell and
Councilman Collins found out quickly that they were no longer doing a public
television slow- mo yawner. This debate moved because that is what
viewers want. They got to see the candidates in action. Taking heat
and experiencing unsure footing is part of being mayor.
The debate even included breaking news. Michael
Miller, editor in chief of the Toledo Free Press, broke the story about
discussions to privatize Toledo Express Airport. That set off a flurry of
indignant tweets as competing reporters frantically hustled to claim "me too"
on the airport story. Funny stuff.
In the end, the real winners were not the candidates, but
the viewers. An email from a viewer simply said, "This is the best debate
I have ever seen." I can't top that.
