TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Toledo Police arrested a teenaged suspect after a standoff that lasted nearly two hours in central Toledo Friday.
Police say the 17-year-old was involved in an attempted robbery and shooting on Waverly Avenue early Friday morning.
According to Toledo Police, officers were called to Palmwood and Baron Steele around 9 a.m. Friday on a person shot.
They located a man with a gunshot wound to his left arm. The man and the woman he was with told officers they gave the suspect a ride from a Sunoco gas station in East Toledo to a home on the 1100 block of Waverly.
Once at the destination, the victims told officers the suspect attempted to rob them, pulling out a gun and shooting the man in the arm. The suspect then fled.
With the help of a brand new K9 officer, police caught up with the suspect after he barricaded himself in his home on Montrose Avenue.
Montrose Avenue was shut down between Dorr Street and Midway Plaisance Street because of the standoff. The suspect ignored all attempts at contact, which left his mother outside frantic.
"I said, 'This is your mom. Would you please come out of there? You don't want it to end up any worse than what it is,'" she said.
She said she was worried her son would end up leaving the house on a stretcher. At 12:15 p.m., the SWAT team busted into the house. Moments later, they came out with the suspect, alive.
"Obviously he didn't want to go to jail, so he stuck it out, made us come in and get him," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "Ultimately, that was a foolish choice because he's going to be going to jail anyway."
