MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The holiday season is just around the corner and while many of us are getting ready to prepare big meals, there are some families that will go without this holiday season.

That is why the Mid-South Food Bank needs help ... and Tuesday, some of that help came in the form of a big donation from Kroger.

"Reaching out and helping communities is what we are about," said Hilary Jones, Kroger Marketing and Advertising.

The massive donation from Kroger was a big surprise for the food bank.

"We called to see what deal we could get on purchasing some turkeys and I got a call from the president saying, 'Why don't we donate some turkeys for you?' said Mid-South Food Bank President Estella Greer.

A truckload was more than Greer even imagined. And the donation comes at a time of great need.

Within the 49 U.S. cities with populations of 1 million or more, Memphis is feeling the hurt more than most with an August unemployment rate of 9.4 percent, which is higher than the national rate of 7.2 percent.

"What we are seeing with the cuts in SNAP benefits and the fact that 40 percent of the population rely on us don't receive any because they are working," said Greer.

Even with the big Kroger donation, the Mid-South Food Bank is still in need of donations this holiday season. And there is plenty of time for you to help.

A donation of $15 buys a turkey to be donated to a family in need. Every dollar donated to the food bank can buy three meals.
