FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the holiday season approaches, schools in the area begin donation drives for those in need. At the University of Findlay, they're turning it into a competition.

Students were given a goal of collecting 50,000 pounds of canned food, and just 12 hours to collect it. Students say it's possible.

"I believe the whole community in Findlay, in general, is benefiting," said Jennie Brown, a grad student at the University of Findlay. "The people who are in need of the food are getting that, and then people are coming together to work together for a common goal."

It's certainly not an easy goal to reach. This year, the Oilers hope to top their school record for the annual Helping Hands Food Drive. In 2012, students collected more than 47,000 pounds of food.

All the food collected will go to local families through Chopin Hall. Organizers say this is the time of year when food banks start to run low on supplies, especially certain items.

"We're really looking for canned fruit, peanut butter, pasta, canned pasta or dry pasta," said David Harr, director of dining services. "We'll take anything, but that's what we're really focused on, because those are the items that Chopin Hall can't get at the food bank."

Food was collected until 7:30 Wednesday night in multiple Findlay locations.
