After several hours of an intense standoff Wednesday night in the Montague village of Turners Falls, a 63-year-old man is now facing several charges.
CBS 3 Springfield was first on scene Wednesday night and was the only station inside the courtroom for his arraignment on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Montague Police Department, Mark Holland was the man who barricaded himself inside his 74 Turnpike Rd. home, causing a number of streets to be shut down.
Police said it all began around 8 p.m. when Holland threatened his roommate with a handgun after he overheard his roommate bad mouthing him over the phone to their landlord.
"After the threat, the resident fled the house and called us," said Montague police Chief Charles Dodge.
For several hours, entire neighborhoods were paralyzed as police task force units and a SWAT team blocked off the area around the home.
"Several officers from the Montague Police Department came in and several agencies around us including Irving, Deerfield, Gill and the Massachusetts State Police responded," said Dodge.
Police said Holland eventually surrendered and was arrested.
He sat handcuffed and shackled in a Greenfield District Courtroom on Thursday afternoon as charges were read against him.
Holland is facing nine charges including assault with a weapon and threatening to commit a crime. He pleaded not guilty to all of them.
Holland's attorney said he had been passed out on the couch during the entire three-hour ordeal and that the weapons confiscated by police afterwards are fake movie props from his previous job as a movie production assistant.
His attorney continued to say Holland's roommate had been trying to get him to move out of the apartment and calling the police may have been a ploy to do that.
When CBS 3 arrived to the apartment Holland's roommate did not want to go on camera and asked us to leave the property.
Holland has no prior record. He was held on a $50,000 bail and will be do back in court on Dec. 2.
