LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Firefighters found a woman dead after an apartment building went up in smoke during the early hours of the morning Tuesday.
Around 3:15 a.m., fire crews responded to a call in the 1500 block of South 9th Street, near Hill Street and 7th Street in Louisville.
Firefighters said smoke was showing from the second floor of an apartment building when they arrived. The complex is a two story building with 10 apartments, according to officials on the scene.
It took 20 firefighters about 15 minutes to put the fire out completely.
Police said a woman was found dead in her bedroom on the second floor. The fire and damage was contained to the room she was discovered in, according to fire crews.
Her identity has not been released.
The rest of the building's occupants made it out unharmed. The Red Cross is temporarily helping those nine people after they were displaced this morning, according to our reporter on the scene.
Neighbors said the deceased woman had two dogs and one of them is being cared for by a resident of the building. The other dog is unaccounted for at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The intersection of 9th and Hill Streets is closed at this time as fire crews remain on the scene.
