LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The Kia Store reported a vehicle stolen off their lot but when police tracked it down, the driver said the dealership gave him the car for 45 days following a test drive.

Officers found the car after the driver, Tyler Brown, 21, got into a wreck with another vehicle at the intersection of Dyer Avenue and Thomas Avenue less than a block from his house in the Pleasure Ridge Park neighborhood of Louisville on August 9, 2013.

While filing a report, police discovered the car Brown was driving had no tags. The VIN number matched a vehicle that was reported stolen from The Kia Store in Louisville.

Brown approached officers on the scene and told them the car belonged to him because he test drove it and the dealership agreed to let him drive it for 45 days, according to a police report.

The suspect had no paperwork to back up his claim and no temporary tag from The Kia Store.

Police questioned people at Kia who said Brown did test drive the car in question 10 days before the accident. However, they also told officers the dealership does not "lend customers vehicles for 45 days."

The stolen car is estimated to be worth over $15,000, according to a police report. It was impounded following a police investigation.

The investigation led to a warrant being put out for Brown's arrest on August 26 but he was not taken into custody until November 11. Police caught up to him just before 3:30 a.m. Monday on Dixie Highway.

He now faces a felony count of receiving stolen property worth $10,000 or more.
