In an effort to reduce the
amount of toxins that run into Lake Erie, the city of Oregon has leased 6.2
acres of land to the University of Toledo.
The University will use
the land to construct a pilot wetland system at Maumee Bay State Park. It will be used to provide storm water
treatment and increase the cleanliness of drinking water.
The new wetland will be
designed to cause local creeks and ditches to overflow into designated areas,
which will allow the wetlands to capture bacteria and consume nutrients before
they go into the lake.
The project is being
funded by two federal grants totaling $1.9 million. It will also serve as a research area for UT
Officials say they plan on
beginning to move dirt for the wetland within the coming weeks.
