Tiffin aims for first balanced budget in years

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The city of Tiffin looks poised to balance its municipal operating budget for the first time in years in 2014.

Mayor Aaron Montz proposed the budget at Wednesday's City Council meeting. The city has $1.67 million left over from last year. That carryover, along with some cuts in spending, allowed Montz to propose a balanced budget.

Under Mayor Montz's plan the city would merge a few departments and employees would contribute 20 percent of their healthcare costs.

The budget would fund fireworks and public pools, both of which were paid for by donations last year. The city would also increase spending for street paving and parks under Montz's plan.

"It's easy to do a budget when there's not a whole lot of money to go around. But, when you actually have money to spend, that's usually when the fights begin. And we were impressed that we walked away last night with very good, positive discussions and no cuts to the budget. And we're looking at trying to continue restoring services as we head into 2014," said mayor Montz.

Council will vote on the 2014 budget on Monday, December 16.
