BG nature center in need of updates

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green officials just launched an ambitious campaign to raise money without the city's help, in an effort to repair a 47-year-old building.

Officials say the current layout for the Bowling Green Wintergarden Park Nature Center isn't cutting it anymore.

"There's no insulation in the ceiling or walls. The flooring is 47 years old. The cabinets are 47 years old. The fireplace is cracked," said Dr. Michelle Grigore, director of Parks and Recreation.

Now they're asking for the community's help to raise $250,000 to renovate the center, which is often used as a meeting up for park visitors and educational programs for children.

The number one complaint is the outdoor bathroom, the only one available in all 108 acres of the park. When the nature center is closed, no one can get in to use the bathroom.

"To build a free-standing unisex restroom that will be open anytime the park is open…really, that's the number one need," Grigore said.

The plans also call for a new kitchen, fireplace, and much-needed insulation. Parents say they want to see more space for children's programming.

"More room for the kinds of things she does with our kids," said Heather Kramer, a parent. "It would be awesome to see that happen, for her to be able to grow the program and have access to all types of materials that maybe she would want to use."

The challenge is finding the money to make it happen. Grigore says they are not asking for funding from the city because, "We've had the same money for 13 years, so my budget is really stretched."

The BG Community Foundation will help raise the money to make the plans a reality.
