A popular Newport Mexican restaurant is back open after a storm badly damaged it a few weeks back.
El Rio Grande, located in Newport Plaza, sustained severe roof damage during a round of severe thunderstoms earlier this month.
A wall extension built on top of the roof collapsed due to strong winds. The extension is nearly 10 ft. tall and people inside the building reported the collapse shook the entire restaurant.
Newport fire and police departments arrived to take care of the damage.
The night of the storm, El Rio Grande Server Jay Torres stated, "I was looking out the window and then I saw leaves and the wind start moving and that's when I felt a shock wave go through my body and it shook the walls like it was paper. It fell in different parts of the restaurant, luckily there wasn't any people at the tables at the time, but yeah, it scared us pretty bad."
The Rio Grande was the only business in that section of the shopping plaza open during the storm.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
El Rio Grande opened back up on Thursday, November 21.
