The thing to do this weekend in Cincy

Whenever the History Channel or PBS airs another documentary about John F. Kennedy, it may be TV overkill, but I always watch.

And this is not the article to fully explain why JFK and the Kennedys remain so fascinating, but having been born years after his death, JFK still generates a level of intrigue.

-On the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination, he'll be remembered worldwide. In fact, one of the most historic artifacts associated with the tragedy is on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. The museum is free admission, and you can actually step inside the SAM 26000 where Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the new president, as well as carried Kennedy's body and Johnson back to Washington D.C.

A photo ID is required for ages 18+.  Visitors must take a shuttle from the main museum complex to the Presidential Gallery to visit the plane, which is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Read FAQs here - http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/questions/topic.asp?id=2219

-Now, if you are anything like my mom, Marcia, you love crafting.  Crafty Supermarket is Saturday inside the Music Hall Ballroom. It's an all-day indie craft show with about 90 different makers and artists selling handmade, really awesome gifts. It's basically a room full of Etsy all-stars. Craft nirvana. More here – http://craftysupermarket.wordpress.com/

P.S. will be SEW MUCH CRAFTING.

-While you're in the neighborhood, buy local and participate in the BuyCincy Holiday Event at area businesses through Sunday! Formerly 'Cincinnati Unchained', the idea is to discover and help the local entrepreneurs making our city unique. There are raffle prizes and giveaways at several shops through Sunday. Full list here: http://www.buycincy.com/cincinnati-unchained/

-The PNC Festival of Lights officially opens Saturday at the Cincinnati Zoo. The ‘Wild Wonderland' is a classic Tri-State tradition for families or date night! It'll be open through January 4, 2014. Ticket info - http://cincinnatizoo.org/events/festival-of-lights/

-Where can you enjoy traditional German schnitzel, stollen and Glühwein all while riding a horse carriage past St. Nikolaus? Christkindlmarkt. It's the Germania Society of Cincinnati's German Christmas market. Enjoy German food, entertainment, seasonal art and more all weekend at Germania Park.

PLUS: Katy Morgan is the Bürgermeisterin! She'll lead the Children's Lantern Parade on Saturday. Be sure to stop by and say hi!

-Art on Vine is back! It's a boutique art fair organized by James Jenkins, an awesome area photographer and owner of Photography for the People. The Rhinegeist Brewery is hosting the event on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Ten artists will showcase and sell some great photography. It's free to attend, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Over-the-Rhine Community Housing.

-Lastly, a week early surprise: The US Bank Ice Rink on Fountain Square officially opens to the public on Friday! Once open, the rink operates seven days a week, including holidays. Whether you're Michelle Kwan or a bit less skilled -- It's fun to head downtown with family and ice skate in circles.
