LONDON (RNN) - Metropolitan Police say three women that have been allegedly held against their will in the United Kingdom for 30 years have been rescued.
A 67-year-old man and 67-year-old woman have been arrested in connection to slavery and domestic servitude. BBC News London says the captors are not British nationals and it's "not likely" that the women are of any relation to them.
Police told BBC News London, that a 69-year-old Malaysian woman, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 30-year-old British were rescued from the home on Oct. 25. Police are investigating whether the 30-year-old woman was born into captivity. Their names have not been released.
Police say the women are "highly traumatized" with "no real exposure to the outside world," and have been taken to a place where they will remain safe.
Authorities said there was no sign of sexual abuse.
"They did have some controlled freedom. The Human Trafficking Unit of the Metropolitan Police deals with many cases of servitude and forced labor," said Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland, during a press conference. "We've seen some cases where people have been held for up to 10 years, but we have never seen anything of this magnitude before."
A documentary on forced marriages by the group Freedom Charity reportedly prompted the investigation. According to the group's website, its stated goal is to raise awareness and prevent child abuse.
"We aim to empower young people to feel they have the tools and confidence to support each other and have practical ways in which they can help their best friend around the issues of family relationships which can lead to early and forced marriage and dishonor-based violence," Freedom Charity stated.
In May, Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus were rescued after being held captive by Ariel Castro for a decade in Cleveland.
Castro was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole, plus 1,000 years. A month into his sentence, he was found dead in his cell.
