Hoping to copy the success of the revitalization of Over-the-Rhine, a Tri-State developer has big plans for Covington.
Several buildings along Madison Avenue look vacant.
"I mean you walk up the street you see for rent, for sale signs. It's a needed upgrade," says Deon Bloom.
George Hagan is the developer who's trying to change that. He says he was inspired three years ago by the progress that began downtown.
"There's just all kinds of incredible businesses already here so I was looking to really grow upon that," explains George Hagan.
The first four properties are located in the 800 and 900 block of Madison Avenue. One used to be a restaurant and another was an old music shop. Deon Bloom says this transformation is refreshing.
"I think it's good for the atmosphere. I think a new look will improve the quality of the area," says Bloom
Hagan says now they're in the process of fixing up the properties. But what's going in is still up for debate. Hagan says it'd be nice to have apartments up top with businesses on the ground floor. Bloom says more entertainment is a priority.
"We got nice entertainment, but new restaurants, living conditions too, the quality of living. Some new construction will definitely attract people," says Bloom
Hagan says there's opportunities to invest in Madison Avenue. The cost to rent property is fairly cheap right now, much like it was years ago in Over-the-Rhine.
"For a young person who wants to get involved in the city, they can do that without a huge, huge sum of money," explains Hagan.
Hagan says he'll continue to look to develop even more properties, but more importantly he hopes others will follow his lead and be a part of re-vitalizing the city.
