SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police in Springfield said they busted a massive marijuana growing operation on Ivanhoe St. Wednesday evening.

Narcotics detectives had been informed of the operation and after an investigation had enough evidence for a search warrant.

Officers knocked on the door of 40 Ivanhoe St. around 8 p.m. Wednesday night and were let in by a child who opened the door. Once inside officers arrested the homeowner, 34-year-old Damaen Melbourne.

Police said the two-story duplex had been converted to a single family home. They say the entire basement had been turned into a marijuana growing operation with a sophisticated hydroponics growing system.

Officers confiscated 622 plants along with the growing equipment. They said they also found six bags of hashish, 158 Oxycontin pills and a lock box with $17,100.

Police said there were children in the house, but wouldn't say how many. The mother, Nicole Melbourne was not arrested so she could care for the children. Police said she was served with a criminal complaint. The Department of Children and Families was called in to investigate.

The couple face multiple charges for possession with intent to distribute and cultivation of marijuana.
