The Chatham County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that Antonio Myawn Bacon, Jr., 23, has been indicted by a Chatham County Grand Jury for statutory rape and six counts of reckless conduct by an HIV infected person.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 80 years in prison.
On Dec. 11, a Chatham County Grand Jury handed down the indictment against Bacon for these offenses against six known females from the Savannah area, including a 15-year-old girl, which led to the statutory rape charge.
Bacon was initially charged when, after learning he was HIV positive, he knowingly exposed a 15-year-old girl to the virus in the summer of 2012.
After learning of Bacon's arrest in October 2013 through local news media, three more females came forward and alleged that Bacon exposed them to the virus sometime during summer 2012 and summer 2013.
Through the course of the investigation, two more females were also indentified.
District Attorney Meg Heap held a press conference on Thursday because of the potential for additional females to have been exposed.
As a public service announcement to the citizens of Chatham County, Heap said in a statement, "The District Attorney's Office is committed to seeking justice for the victims of crime, as well as to the safety of the citizens of Chatham County. I urge anyone that has been in potentially hazardous contact with Bacon to seek medical attention immediately, get tested for HIV and to contact my office to ensure that he is properly prosecuted for this deplorable crime against society."
Anyone with additional information on this case is asked to call Assistant District Attorney Emily Puhala at the Chatham County District Attorney's Office at 912.652.7308, or contact Detective Nicole Khaalis with the SCMPD SVU at 912.651.6742.
