LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Bourbon, bats and horses will soon have company in Louisville's signature staples - amateur athletes.

Indianapolis grew up as a city decades ago when the city went after and got several major amateur athletic events.

Now it is Louisville's turn – and kudos to the Louisville Sports Commission for working to make it happen.

Louisville's been awarded host city status for 13 National Collegiate Athletic Association championships over the next four years.

The Division I field hockey championships will return for a fifth time, and be joined by collegiate athletes in Division II and Division III.  All will take place at the University of Louisville.

"Tom" Sawyer State Park, the site of the Division 1 men's and women's cross country championships last year,  will be the site for the Division II and Division III men's and women's cross country championships in  2016 and Division I championships again in 2017. Spalding University will host the Division III championships.

Bellarmine will host the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships Fall Festival, crowning champions in men and women's soccer and cross country and women's field hockey and volleyball.  Bellarmine's successful efforts in hosting the Spring Festival last year and Fall Festival three years ago made them a natural choice again.

Next summer the USA gymnastics event will be held at the KFC Yum! Center.

Our next push should be for Louisville to host some Olympic trials.
