FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

First snow, now rain could be causing problems for folks in Hancock County. They're preparing for possible flooding this weekend.

Current piles of snow, combined with the coming rain and spring-like temperatures this weekend are cause for concern in Findlay.

"There's going to be some warming temps, so the rain is going to melt the snow and the ground is still frozen, so it can't really seep in ," said Todd James, executive director of the Hancock County Red Cross. "There is a potential there that we could see some flooding in the area."

Findlay is no stranger to flooding. James says he's more worried during the winter months when it comes to high waters due to snowfall and a potential for an early thaw.

"The big flood we had, of course, was August of 2007, in the summer," he said. "But if you look back at February of 2008, March of 2009, February and March of 2010 – these are the conditions when we see significant flooding."

James and the Red Cross are keeping an eye on the forecast and hoping they don't have to open a shelter so close to the holiday, but they will if need be. In the mean time, James wants residents to prepare now, before it's too late.

"Make sure that we've got a plan, that our family kit is put together, that we know what our sources of information are, because disasters happen without a moment's notice in many cases, so we've got to be ready before they happen," he said.
