Meals on Wheels truck stolen while on delivery

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The suspect acted fast and didn't leave anything behind. When this driver stepped away for a minute, a thief took the meals... and the wheels.

Neighbors who live on Urban Avenue in Columbus were stunned to hear what happened to a Meals on Wheels volunteer as he was making a delivery nearby.

Rosa Edwards said, "The people next door are dependent on people to help them. Then someone comes along and misuses the person who is trying to help, I think that's very awful."

Trevor Jones was on his regular route Monday morning, delivering free meals to elderly and sick patients who can't leave the house.  Jones said he's usually in and out so quickly, he sometimes leaves his keys inside the delivery truck.

"I was in the house maybe a minute and a half- two minutes- and I walked outside, and I saw my truck just peeling down the road and I was like 'aww man,'" said Jones.

They got away with Jones' phone and his only source of transportation.  Also inside were the rest of the meals waiting to be handed out to people who really need them.   The thief struck as he was delivering food to Cora Russell.

"It's real horrible that someone would steal someone's truck, from a person who was doing a good deed and who has a job," said Russell.

"I enjoy the job a lot. You get to meet some really nice people and sort of make their day better," said Jones.

With a vision to end hunger for seniors and low-income families across the country, Meals on Wheels is the non-profit with the largest number of volunteers in the nation.   They depend on people like Jones who give their time to help them succeed in their mission of watching over those who have no one to care for them.

Until his truck is recovered, Jones plans to rent a car so he continue to bring food to the residents on his route.

Police are still looking for that 2007 Chevy Silverado crew cab pick-up truck. It's described as silver with tinted windows and rain guards, and it has two unique bumper stickers on the back.   One reads "Rammstein" and the other says 'I Wrestled A Bear."  It has Alabama license plate 57C28L4.
