Charlotte schools on two-hour delay Tuesday morning

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Buses will run routes and schools will open two hours later than the normal time.

CMS staff made the decision due to severe weather conditions in the Charlotte area.

Reports indicate that temperatures will be extremely low during the morning hours.

Associate Superintendent Dr. Guy Chamberlain said "with those temperatures it's unlikely buses will start immediately so we anticipate two hours to get all buses on the road."

"Our students' safety is our top priority," said Superintendent Heath Morrison. "We do not want students waiting at bus stops in near-zero temperatures."

All before- and after-school enrichment programs (ASEP) will begin at the normal time. All after-school and athletic activities will operate on the normal schedule. Schools will dismiss at the normal time.

Dr. Chamberlain said the heating system will operate "all night long" in school buildings. Custodial staff will be in early to check for "areas not operating."

CMS officials say it's possible some of the older schools will see pipe breaks but maintenance crews will be on standby to respond to any building emergencies.

Parents are encouraged to dress students warmly, in layers and with hats and gloves. CMS will continue to monitor weather and road conditions throughout the week.
