NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man who was wanted for first degree murder charges in connection to the death of a man in Leland earlier this week was taken into custody after a short chase through Wilmington Wednesday.

According to Deputy US Marshal Russ Fields, the Eastern NC Violent Fugitive Task Force was making round through Wilmington, checking motels for James "Jimmy" Ketchum.

An arrest warrant was issued Monday for Ketchum for his alleged involvement in the death of Jason Rowland Anderson. Anderson was shot and killed overnight Sunday into Monday off of Townsend Lane, near Village Rd. NE in Leland.

Wednesday evening Ketchum was formally charged with murder, breaking and entering, communicating threats, robbery with dangerous weapon.

Earlier in the day officials spotted the car, a blue Saturn, Ketchum was known to be driving and followed him on Market Street in an unmarked vehicle.

At some point, Ketchum noticed he was being followed and tried to speed away. Ketchum lost control of his car and ended up in a ditch on South College Road near Pine Cliff Drive, in front of the College Road Animal Hospital.

Ketchum jumped out of the car and started running, but only made it about 25 feet into the woods before he was caught, around 11:45 a.m.

Another person who was in the car with him, Calron Williams, also tried to run, but only made it about 50 feet into the woods before officials caught up with him. Fields said Williams will be charged for fleeing to elude arrest. Williams was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony probation violation out of county.

According to Kiernan Wesson, an employee at College Road Animal Hospital, police were yelling at the men, "Stop right there, or I'll shoot!"

Ketchum is in custody of the Leland Police Department at this time.

Anderson's cousin, Budd Cleveland, went to the scene of the crash Wednesday to see what was going on.

Cleveland said they were all friends and Ketchum and Anderson were living together.

According to Cleveland, Ketchum and Williams approached Anderson with robbing a store, but he declined and kicked them out of his home.

Cleveland claims that Anderson was trying to turn his life around and that this was the best decision he ever made but ended up costing him his life.

"My cousin finally stood up for himself for the first time in his life," said Cleveland. "He wanted to turn over a new leaf and a [explicit] junkie ends up shooting him."

Cleveland said Ketchum busted down the door and allegedly shot Anderson after a deputy went to ask him about Ketchum.

Anderson's cousin is glad Ketchum and Williams are in custody, but said he wishes he could have caught them first.

"I think he doesn't deserve to live, it should be an instant death for him," said Cleveland. "I would have taken care of him myself, but then I would probably be the one going to prison."

Both Ketchum and Williams are currently being held at the Leland Police Department while officials gather evidence.
