Alabama State University is taking another step and expanding it's global footprint to Peru. The University recently signed an educational agreement with the Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association in Iquitos, Peru.
The agreement would allow students from ASU to travel to Peru to get firsthand experience dealing with tropical diseases through laboratory work, roundtable discussions, clinical case conferences and field study. The students may also receive college credits.
"It gives our students the opportunity to have formal training provided by experienced doctors who have specializations that are uncommon in our region," Herron-Williams said. "So, instead of just working in a lab or filing papers, our students are actually doing infectious disease ward rotations, maternity ward rotations, emergency room rotations and assisting doctors in the operating room. They are learning theory and pedagogy in the lectures provided by the physicians, and then they are exposed to practical training."
ASU's new relationship with TPalDA will guarantee slots for its students each year to travel to Peru to participate in the program. Undergraduate and graduate students in all STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields will be eligible to apply for the program.
"ASU's overall objective is to provide meaningful study-abroad experiences for our students," Herron-Williams said. "We are expanding our reach so our students can expand theirs."
