The Andalusia Police Department has arrested and charged a suspect in connection to an armed robbery near the Covington County Bank Monday afternoon.
The robbery happened around noon when a man approached two people who were walking into the bank. The man showed a handgun and demanded the victims' money. Afterward, the suspect fled on foot toward College Street.
An off-duty police dispatcher with the Andalusia Police Department saw the suspect and followed him while relaying the location to responding officers. Authorities say the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Elba resident Gregory James Goldsmith, disappeared behind some houses on 8th Avenue.
A perimeter was quickly set up and a K-9 tracking dog from the Covington County Sheriff's Posse tracking unit brought in.
While talking with the suspect, officers found a bag on the roof of the house that matched the money bag taken from the robbery. Inside were all the items reported stolen by the victims.
Goldsmith was arrested and charged with Robbery 1st, and Theft of Property 1st. His bond was set at $750,000.
