GSW dedicates Barksdale Court, splits with North Georgia

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

It's hard to discuss Georgia Southwestern basketball, or any Hurricane athletics, without mentioning Randolph Barksdale.

On Thursday, GSW made sure Barksdale would be at every game.

The Canes dedicated Randolph Barksdale Court at the Storm Dome Thursday night, between the men's and women's games against Barksdale's alma mater, North Georgia.

The former men's basketball coach won 378 games in 18 seasons in Americus, and took the Canes to six NAIA National Tournament appearances.

He says when he took his first head coaching job in 1979 at GSW, he never thought this would happen.

"When I came here, I was 22 years old and probably thought I could whoop the world," he says. "There's a lot of people that played into this, and I can't overemphasize the players that we had. We were fortunate to get really good players and really good people that wanted to win, and that means a lot."

Barksdale retired from the court in 2006 to focus on the Canes' athletic director position full-time.

In the AD role, Barksdale helped lead GSW from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

HURRICANES 84, NIGHTHAWKS 78

Senior forward Daryl Davis went 12-12 from the field and 7-8 from the line to score 31 points, and lead GSW to a 84-78 victory over North Georgia.

Davis, Johathan Brooks, and Alan Arnett combined for 69 of the Canes' 84 points.

GSW improves to 15-3 overall, and 7-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.

#19 LADY NIGHTHAWKS 89, LADY HURRICANES 83

The Lady Canes gave 19th ranked North Georgia all they could handle, but the Lady Nighthawks rallied for an 89-83 win.

Mimi Hill led UNG with 21, and Stephanie Huffman added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Nighthawks.

Tiara Thompson scored 25 to pace GSW in the loss.

The loss drops the Lady Canes to 7-9 overall, and 2-7 in PBC play.

The Canes and Lady Canes take Randolph Barksdale Court again Saturday when they host Columbus State.
