ELMORE, OH (Press Release) -
Tank's Meats of Elmore, Ohio is issuing a
voluntary recall of products that may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus.
The product subject to recall is
Landjaegers produced on or before January 9, 2014. The label on each clear bag
bares the establishment number "EST. 76" within the Ohio Department of
Agriculture's mark of inspection. This product was sold to numerous retail
stores in Northwest Ohio.
The recall is the result of
Landjaegers product samples collected by the Ohio Department of Agriculture
that were found positive for Bacillus cereus. The samples were
collected as part of an investigation after the department was notified of
illnesses being reported by the Ottawa County Health Department, who also
reported five ill patients who experienced illness onset dates of December 1,
2, 3 and 19th that may have resulted from the Landjaegers product.
One patient did test positive for Bacillus cereus.
As a result of the ensuing
investigation, it was determined there is a possible link between the
Landjaegers product that was produced by Tank's Meats in October 2013 and the
illnesses in Ohio. The recall is precautionary, as there has been no
conclusive link between the illnesses and the Landjaeger product at Tank's
Meats. As an additional precaution, the company is recalling this product
from the date of this announcement for the previous two years.
Consumption of food contaminated
with Bacillus Cereus can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain
within 6-15 hours after eating the contaminated product. Nausea may accompany
diarrhea, but vomiting rarely occurs. Most recover from illness within 24
