Former Buckeye, UT player brings energy to team

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

University of Toledo basketball fans have fallen in love with his acrobatic dunks; JD Weatherspoon has quickly made a name for himself in the Glass City.

But his journey to this point has taken some interesting turns. A Columbus kid, Weatherspoon committed to the Buckeyes out of high school, but he left Ohio State after just two years to get more playing time. First, though, he had to sit out last year because of transfer rules in the NCAA.

"It's tough definitely," he said. "I had to sit on the bench at Ohio State as well, so I just felt like I hadn't played basketball in forever and just knowing I could have helped the team last year, it was frustrating but I just know I had to be patient."

His role on this team is defined. His high-flying dunks have become a staple this season.

"It's real fun. Just getting the crowd energized and getting my teammates energized," he said. "I feel like that's my main goal - to be that energizer athletic person, which I am, and help everybody get going."

Weatherspoon's basketball resume is an impressive one. In high school, he played with Jared Sullinger and Trey Burke and he was on a successful team with the Buckeyes. That has led teammates to lean on him for advice.

"The guys know me and Justin have played in the NCAA Tournament and they know I played on a Final Four team, so they look to me for advice and just knowing what I've been through and who I played with, they just ask me what I've gotta do for us to win."
