Pizza restaurants usually score well on health inspections, but two pizzeria's each racked up five critical violations on their last inspections.
First up is Ledo Pizza at 4030 Gathering Place in Henrico.
"We were just getting everything set up," explained manager Karen Kong. "We were caught off guard."
Among Ledo's five critical violations, the report says there was a build up of food on the pasta holders. Kong says now they clean them more often.
"Just making sure the pasta holders are clean, that we're cleaning them throughout the day," she said.
The report also says the hand sink was blocked and filthy.
"We're always a little dusty from the flour and the dough when we're washing our hands," said Kong. "So, what we've done is every couple of hours we'll go through and clean them and sanitize them."
The report says Ledo was using a gallon of milk a day after its expiration date. The milk was thrown out and Kong says all violations were corrected.
"We've retrained all the managers and the staff members on hygiene, cleaning, and making sure the restaurant is great, so we can really help satisfy customers coming in here," she said.
The other pizza restaurant was Brooklyn Pizza and Subs at 10613 Hull Street Road in Chesterfield. Its five critical violations include that meatballs, sausage pieces and cheese were not being kept cold enough. Brooklyn had all problems corrected by the re-inspection two weeks later. But the inspector returned a couple of times to make sure water from the sinks was the required 100 degrees.
Restaurants might feel like fish bowls during health inspections, but the Health Department says Fish Bowl Bistro and Bar, 101 South 15th Street in Richmond, is squeaky clean. It wins the NBC12 Hall of Fame Award for acing three inspections and not having any critical violations in two years.
