Two dogs are alive after an incredible rescue by Hanover firefighters. The desperate scenario unfolded off Mountain Road, Saturday afternoon. The labs fell into an icy pond, barely able to keep their heads above water.
Firefighters acted on instinct, heading right into the frigid pond. The crew from Hanover Fire Station 8 is part of the tactical rescue team, especially trained in water rescues.
"You could see (the dog's) feet. They were trying to grasp for the edge of ice to get out," described Hanover firefighter Bobby Drake.
Drake and crew members extended a ladder on top of the ice. Two firefighters anchored it from the edge of the pond, while Drake made his way across the ladder- hovering over the freezing pond. A rope secured Drake to his fellow firefighters.
"I was scooting along on the ice with the ladder, and just making sure I kept an eye on (the dog) to figure out if she was going to go under, or if she was going to come toward me… so I could be prepared to react," continued Drake. "When I got out to the dog, she put her paws out on the edge of the ladder. When she did, it pulled the front of the ladder, and me, into the water."
Drake and the dog were submerged in frigid water. Drake held tightly to the dog, as firefighters helped pull both Drake and the lab through the icy water to safety. Meanwhile, the other lab made it out on the other side of the pond.
The dogs were grateful.
"The female dog…came directly up to me, and sat at my feet. She was kind of whining and whimpering, and wanted to be held. You could tell she was cold," added Drake.
Drake had only one option, at that point.
"I held her. I got a blanket off of the ambulance… and wrapped it around her," said Drake.
Both pups are now warm and safe, after firefighters didn't hesitate to bear the stinging cold, to save their lives.
