Toledo firefighters move towards normalcy after tragedy

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

During the past week, many people have talked about how "Monday will come" for Toledo firefighters following the deaths of Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman.

Over the past week Toledo fire crews have answered calls during a week filled with grief and sadness.

"The men and women of the Toledo Fire Department are always there when the call comes in, not just on Monday morning, but through the whole chaos of last week," says Dan Desmond, Toledo Firefighters Local 92 Vice President.

While those firefighters report for duty as individuals, Desmond says they carry out their mission united as one family.

"We live as a family every third day. We go to the engine house, we start our morning together, we clean together, we cook together, we respond to fires and EMS calls together. Certainly everyone's leaning on each other. That's the way the fire service has always been," said Desmond.

Many signs of community support are being displayed inside the fire stations, and Desmond says that support is going a long way to help them through a tough time.

"The community as a whole, the citizens of Toledo have just stepped up. It's been overwhelming and so positive, that's what gets people through also," said Desmond.
