Proposed bill would allow for legal representatives in cases of expulsion, suspension

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A bill is expected to go before the Va. General Assembly Tuesday that if approved, would allow for college students to be represented by attorneys if they face expulsion or suspension from school.

The legislation has been proposed by Del. Rick Morris. Many colleges have judiciary committee trials, or a student honor court, which makes the final decision on whether or not a student may return to classes.

Del. Morris said that the legislation would be helpful, as expulsions can mark a student's record for the rest of their lives.

The bill would only apply to public colleges and universities. North Carolina passed a similar bill in 2013.
