Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson administered the Oath of Office to a new Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police and two other key positions on Monday morning.
Chief Michael McGrath was sworn in as the new Safety Director, Calvin Williams is the new Chief of Police, Commander Chief Wayne Drummond was promoted to Deputy Chief and Dennis Hill was promoted to Commander.
Former Safety Director Marty Flask has taken on a new role as a special assistant to Mayor Jackson.
The salary breakdown is as follows:
Chief Calvin Williams says he is excited for the challenges, and wants to build new partnerships with the community, citizens and business. The Chief wants to strengthen the confidence people have in police and promises a transparent department. He says he is keenly aware of both the challenges and opportunities facing the department.
"We will increase the transparency of the division by making sure people understand our procedures and everything is on the table," said new Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams.
With a certain amount of distrust of the police in the black community after the controversial police chase many believed it was time for a change, one of them Rev. E.T. Caviness.
"The one thing that we were hung up on was this fact that the lack of diversity of this department and so he has really acquiesced to that. Not that we were responsible for it but we're just delighted and ecstatic that he's done it," stated Rev. E.T. Caviness.
Director McGrath says he is transitioning from 41 years of police work to his new job. The usually steel-faced former Chief was emotional.
"The community is my life line," Safety Director McGrath said.
McGrath then turned his attention to Mayor Jackson.
"So Mayor thank you for your confidence, your support and I hope I don't let you down, sir," McGrath said.
The Safety Director and the Police Chief have been under fire for the handling of a deadly police chase. In November of 2012, police chased a car across town, then 13 officers killed the driver and passenger with 137 shots.
